Phonemic inventories - Assignment Exampleor instance, you relieve oneself to begin with closed lips, build up some air rack behind that closure, and then release it in a small burst (Bischoff and Fountain 20114). According to Bischoff and Fountain (2011), a vowel is a sound in an oral diction made by opening the vocal tract such that, no air build up occurs above the glottis. For this reason, vowel sounds atomic number 18 typically much darker (louder) than the consonant sounds (Bischoff and Fountain 2011 6).Bischoff and Fountain (201142) defines phonic inventory as the set of phones that are distinctive in a given language. phonic inventory is not simply a collection of sounds rather it is more of a set of phonemic distinctions (Bischoff and Fountain 201111). Understanding of phonemic inventory of a language helps learners of the language make complex combinations of features with ease (Bischoff and Fountain 201111). According to Bischoff and Fountain (201141), a minimal pair is a pair of words that have distinct meanings, but that differ only with respect to a single phone. (Bischoff and Fountain 201141) further says that the existence of a minimal pair is proof that the phonetic distinction between the differing phones is phonemic in the relevant language. Minimal pairs help us to discover which phonetic properties are distinctive, or phonemic, in a language (Bischoff and Fountain 20116).My illustration of the IPA article is about Bardi, a language spoken in Western Kimberly Region in Northwestern Australia (Claire et al. 2012 334). Illegal immigrants receiving social services, for example, food Essay

Illegal immigrants receiving social services, for example, food stamps, wellbeing, and medical care - Essay ExampleMost these people come from the South the States and Southeast Asia. Majority of these undocumented immigrants head to California, Texas and Florida. The large number of immigrants, whether legal or illegal significantly impacts the economical state of the country. The Federation for American immigration Reform estimates about $45 billion worth of expenses for providing social services, education, roads, prisons and other services to these wildcat immigrants (Glicken, p.375). In contrast, studies that focus on illegal immigrants such as a paper published by the American Immigration Law Foundation indicate that unauthorized immigrants does not use public services as much as the legal immigrants (Wepman, p.339). The paper specifically states that a 1987 study as an example that just 2% of illegal Mexican immigrants received welfare and just 3% accepted food stamps (Wepm an, p.339). This suggests that unauthorized immigrants are not significantly impacting the social welfare system of the United States. One of the major concerns relating to undocumented immigrants is their use of the social welfare system. Because these illegal immigrants come to the United States without resources or employment, they use the services and public support provided by the United States. ... ill public and they have the right to live, thus, the Welfare Reform Act of 1996 was provisioned to restrict them from any grants and retirement, welfare, health, disability, food assistance and unemployment benefits besides still receive emergency medical services. undocumented immigrants have clearly impacted the economical and social state of the country. Conservatives believe that these people drain the social welfare as they go about utilize the legal taxpayers money for their social needs, such as medical and food assistance. On the other side of the fence, opposing views b elieve these people do not so much take a part of the social welfare system as the legal citizens and immigrants do. Because undocumented immigrants get along and understand that they are unauthorized immigrants, they do not come forth claiming benefits for fear of being identified, thus risking deportation. That is also the main reason these people are underpaid, overworked and unfairly treated in labor, housing and education. It is important to understand that illegal immigrants do not actually have the same federal rights as the legal immigrants. Thus, they have a cast down chance of using the social welfare system to cover their needs. Yes, they impact the social welfare system in terms of medical services but it doesnt mean they aim to spend billions of dollars claiming medical benefits. What is important for them is to live and not to die. Thats actually the main reason they come to the hospital, even if they know they are undocumented immigrants, and not to extort money fro m the state. Yes, there are some groups calling for increased benefits for the illegal immigrants but the state is still in control of who they provide the services for and who they restrict. Although Socrates argument sounds theoretically possible, the problems with the two premises as well as his wrong(p) answers to Critos suggestions somehow makes the whole argument unsound.Socrates case was that of a certain death penalty through drinking of the hemlock. Crito arrived in prison in Athens in order to convince Socrates to escape for that was obviously and logically his only chance to escape. Crito offers him four reasons to escape. First, he offered him a bribe of money. Second, he told him that it was Socrates friends desire to jock him. Third, Crito said that Socrates survival would benefit the majority. Lastly, Crito emphasized the idea of the importance of posterity to Socrates. Nevertheless, Socrates refused for the fact that none of these four ideas mean the good and upright bread and butter that Socrates has been onerous to emphasize. According to Socrates, the most important thing is not life, but the good life (Crito 48b, 51). The role of innocence in the exoneration process - Essay ExampleHowever, this is not evermore to be, and there is always the likelihood that an innocent person is convicted2. This paper attempts to explain ways that people wrongly convicted get proof of their innocence. The causes of wrong convictions are full ranging and comprise all features of the pre-trial and trial stages of the criminal justice process ranging from false allegations, incompetent police investigating, police misconduct, erroneous forensic science and evidence, and poor model from criminal defense lawyers. Once an alleged victim of an unjust conviction has lost their appeal, there is a slight opportunity that the courts will be in a position to stop the conviction3.In these cases, victims of outlaw(a) convictions are likely to have exhausted the legal aid unit and it will be up to them, their friends, supporters, families, pro-bono lawyers and voluntary groups to uncover the evidence of innocence and present it to the relevant authorities such as the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC). 2Investigating a suspected wrongful conviction is a long and challenging process. Cases of high profile injustices like the Cardiff Newsagent Three and Sean Hodgson show that it can take several years of investigation before the evidence that leads to the quashing of the conviction is found4. Many molds that attempt to exonerate innocent people out of prison have come up. One such project is the Innocence Network project founded in 1992 whose principle objective is to get as many innocent people out of prison as practicable and turn the experience of these people into a learning experience that could help repair the systematic failings in the criminal justice system5.The project exonerates people by use of post-conviction DNA where the DNA from the crime scene is tested against the DNA of the accused. Often, people wrongly convicted of serious crimes like homicide or abuse has

Critical Discussion - Essay ExampleIn discussing the influence of educational pioneers from social and political points of view, Ornstein takes positions as a progressivist on one hand (New-tone) and a postmodernist (Ultra-New-Tone) on the other. The arguments be centered around the effects of education, reflected in the society and the above quote, is used to swear Mr Ultra-New-Tones radical position.Michel Apples statement may be understood to mean that, schools and other institutions of Education have a significant control over the social and scotch systems, within which they operate. The justification for this is, schools are knowledge centers and their primary responsibility lies in the proper dissemination of knowledge. Most of childs life is spent in the school and what is taught present shapes their behaviors in the social system that they otherwise live in.The phrase cultural capital, can be used to encompass various types of knowledge, skills, talent etc, the possessio n of which provides a sure status in the society (http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_capital). It can be thought of as the tangible and intangible effects of culture on the Society. In proposing that there are inequities in culture capital, just as there is an unequal distribution of economic capital, Apple seems to imply that the current systems of education are the reasons why the inequalities exist and hence they bring to change so that they can be overcome. Ornstein has used this implication in his argument supporting the radical view, that a revolutionary change in the system is required and that the focus be shifted from one of ranking and testing to one of freedom in learning. The basis of the arguments by the radicals stems from the fundamental belief that the conservative philosophical system in Education is too objective to be democratic whereas the radicals subjective approach broadens the scope of standards and lends itself to be an ideal equalizer. The postmodernists also hold that continuous and quick change is necessary to adapt to the exponential growth, in information that the contemporary generation is forced to keep pace with. According to Ornstein, what is implied by Michael Apples rather melodramatic statement that schools ... shape our lives and take control over us, is that in the technological societies that we live in, it is imperative that, radical reforms are made with an immediate sense of urgency. The Postmodernists versus the Educational Pioneers and Progressivism The line about whether radical reform is required, to narrow the perceived inequality in distribution of knowledge or if this can be better achieved by adhering to time-tested principles laid out by educational pioneers can be conducted on various planes (1) Effect that

With our model, we focus on four main areas for supporting teachers. Teachers need curriculum and we define that as the key innate learning that students need to know passim their career and that tie back to standards, benchmarks, and expectations. In addition, the districts leadership noted that teachers, young and veteran alike, were struggling with 21st century digital skills. As the district built its strategic plans, leadership challenged itself to think more comprehensively about how to step into a digital learning environment. EducAToR communITIES of PRAcTIcE.Professional development was among the districts first reform targets. Notes Canuel, We have expanded the traditional professional development model. We believe that quality professional development is much more time sensitive and closer to the school. We use many site-based models for staff development and weve done a great deal of work around communities of practice, which, weve discovered, can be incredibly powerful. These online communities provide discussion boards and give the distr icts teachers the opportunity to share best practices. In Jefferson County, professional learning communities are now favourable both in and across the districts 150 school buildings. The district introduced traditional online courses and discovered that educators genuinely valued the ability to interact with their colleagues. Canuel notes that quite naturally, teachers are simultaneous members of multiple communitieswithin their own buildings, by grade level, by subject matter and more.Using a platform that integrates online course and content delivery and community, the district supports these multiple professional learning communities with a growing collection of custom resources and tools. Weve used technology-based tools to create a portal/professional learning community system, so teachers now receive customized delivery of information, around our four key priorities. As an example, first grade teachers receive specific first grade information supporting curriculum, instructional practice, and other relevant communication.Canuel reports that this new system empowers first grade teachers to interact and share with one another, supporting informal professional development among colleagues. He also noted that students now see their teachers modeling effective, productive use of technology and students perceive that teachers are engaging in their world. Canuel also reported anecdotally that the new system is supporting teacher recruiting more effectively. He cites examples in which prospective recruits notice that the district is using the same kind of tools Im used to using in college. Its tangible evidence that the district supports its teachers with quality resources and tools when new teachers come on board. EnABLIng EffEcTIvE PRofESSIonAL dEvELoPmEnT WITH TEcHnoLogyNCTAFs Thomas Carroll offers important insights with regard to the role of 21st century technology tools and learning environments and their impacts on creating and sustaining teacher quality and efficacy. Carroll points out that imbed professional development can and should support induction and mentoring. In addition, technology now makes it possible to build communities focused on instruction and curriculum relevance and coherence. Additionally, 21st century tools allow teachers to communicate effectively with parents and provide teachers with the ability to give students immediate feedback about how theyre performing.According to Carroll, this directly affects teacher retention and most importantly results in improved teaching quality and student learning. ImPAcTIng TEAcHER RETEnTIon When districts support professional development programs with technology-based tools, the vision of jobembedded, on-demand teacher support becomes realistic. With effective learning management platforms, all teachers have the opportunity to expand access to professional development, reflect on their practice, and communicate with others, and the districts have tools to manage and course of instruction teachers engagement and progress. In the contemporary teaching and learning environment, every teacher needs to be effective. This demands the tools and resources required to improve practice continuously. Carroll makes a direct union between effective technology tools and improved teacher retention and efficacy particularly when these tools make it easier for teachers to monitor their own and students performance. He states, Turnover is often control by a sense of efficacy. If teachers know they are doing a good job and making a difference with students, they are less likely to leave. When you can reduce turnover, you can start to improve effectiveness over time. TEAcHER-To-TEA cHER coLLABoRATIon Technology-based collaboration and collaborative tools are also part of the emerging vision. Collaborative practice gives teachers the ability to learn from one another, benefit from self- and peer-assessment, and to plan and build instructional strategies in concert.Young teachers often report that they are isolated in their first-year teaching, working in a sink or swim environment. Learning, including learning to teach, is a social, collaborative process and according to NCTAFs Thomas Carroll, its logical then to tap the power of technology to support teacher-to-teacher collaboration across a building, a district or a wider network of peers. That scaffolds teacher retention and accelerates new teachers toward proficiency and effectiveness.
