An unnamed narrator opens the story The Tell-Tale Heart by addressing the reviewer and claiming that he is nervous only when not mad. He says that he is going to tell a story in which he pass on defend his sanity yet confess to having killed an older part. His motivation was not out of passion nor desire for money, tho rather a fear of the art objects disgusted blue eye. Yet gain, he insists that he is not half-baked because his cool and careful actions are not those of a lunatic even if they were criminal. Right from the second paragraph he states, It is unacceptable to say how first the idea entered my brain; skillful now at one time conceived; it haunted me day and night. I loved the older humanity. He had never wronged me. (Poe 172) The fact that he sees nothing wrong with his actions clear demonstrates just how much he has actually lost it! He feels as if any everyday person would carry on with the same plan just as he did and that it would be totally accepta ble. The narrator pees so caught up in difficult to justify his story that he fails to remember how this all started in the first place.
